Commission on Spirituality

The Bishop’s Commission on Spirituality was called together by Bishop Henry N. Parsley in 1998. The Commission is currently composed of 15 people from around the Diocese of Alabama. There are Lay and Clergy members, each serving a 3-year term on a rotating basis.

Part of the original vision of this Commission included the design and development of Retreat Days. This has grown into 3 regular diocesan wide workshops and retreats.

There is an annual Lenten Retreat. The invited retreat leader is asked to design a program that is reflective and incorporates some quiet meditation time. This is held at Camp McDowell, Friday evening until lunch on Sunday.

The Commission sponsors an annual Bishop’s Quiet Day. This is usually scheduled for the first Saturday in Advent. Bishop Parsley started this day when he joined our Diocese in 1997. This event is rotated around the different Convocations in the Diocese.

There is an annual Fall Workshop that is usually scheduled around mid November. This is usually a more hands on; activity oriented format with some quiet time built into the schedule. This is held a Camp McDowell, Friday evening until Sunday lunch.

We are excited to present Father Martin Smith, acclaimed author as retreat leader for our upcoming 2008 Lenten Retreat to be held at Camp McDowell March  7-9, 2008.  The theme Father Martin has chosen is SLEEPER, AWAKE!  Paul and the Renewal of Prayer. In this retreat you will meet Paul again as a spiritual guide, and explore the power of his radical teaching to deepen your prayer and revolutionize the way we face the challenges and opportunities. Father Martin has written books such as A Season for the Spirit and The Word is Very Near You, Reconciliation and Compass and Stars.
